The Town of Carman is moving ahead with plans to widen 2nd Street S.W. along the east side of Carman Elementary School. In fact, Mayor Bob Mitchell says work has already begun to extend the road another ten feet to the west.

"So what we want to do is take the boulevard out and move the curve back."

He explains the staff parallel parking lane will be moved over to make the road less congested, especially at the start and end of the school day when vehicle and student traffic is at a height. The number of spots may be slightly less than before, but Mitchell says that's because a pick-up/drop-off zone is being created at the south end of the street at the intersection with Highway 245.

"On the east side of the street...we're going to eliminate two or three spots there and then we're probably going to eliminate two on the west side of the street."

Prairie Rose School Division will not be chipping in to the $35,000 project as the Board of Trustees, Senior Administration and School Administrators believe no changes at Carman Elementary are needed at this time. In a report to Council, the Division outlined that student safety is addressed with the school's supervision plan but added officials will continue to monitor the situation.
