Fifty-eight students will be crossing the stage Tuesday, graduating from Carman Collegiate.

Bailey Gitzel and Katie Tjaden-McClement are co-valedictorians for the class of 2016. They are both a little scared and excited to be graduating and see what the future has in store for them.

Starting this fall, Gitzel will be studying plant biotechnology at the University of Manitoba. "I plant to go into the development sector of agriculture and I want to do a lot of research. I also want to help farmers in developing countries and just help farmers across Canada and across the world."

As for Tjaden-McClement, she'll be heading to the University of British Columbia to study sciences. "I would like to be an optometrist...but I'm definitely open to other options. I think that as I enter university and take different courses I'll find out more of what I like and I'll find out about jobs I never knew existed."

The duo will be delivering a valedictorian speech at Tuesday's graduation ceremony and plan to talk about their memories of their years in school and their hopes for the future.

Tjaden-McClement says one of those memories for her is participating in Envirothon, an annual hands-on environmental education competition that encourages team work, problem-solving and public speaking skills while creating an appreciation for current environmental issues.

"We got to learn about the environment...we got to compete as a team, so that's something that's definitely made more interested in sciences."

For Gitzel, her favourite memory is the spirit of community involvement within Carman Collegiate.

"We got to volunteer and we got to learn to give back to our community."

The pair thanks their parents, teachers, family and friends for getting them to this point in life.
