The RM of Cartier is looking into what it would cost to evaluate the gravel content of a plot of land it owns.

Cartier owns 320 acres of land in the RM of Woodlands, north of Marquette, that used to be a source of gravel for the municipality. Cartier Reeve Dale Fossay says council resolved at its meeting this week to ask the public works department to obtain quotes on digging test holes to investigate if the site still has deposits.

“It was a gravel pit many years ago ... and it's been used for pasture in recent years. Now we're going to get a price on having a company do some investigation to see if there is any recoverable gravel down beneath the soil,” Fossay says. “There may or may not be. It's just to verify what we have there, if anything.”

Fossay adds the municipality will only pursue digging test holes if it makes sense from a cost perspective.
