Last night's Portage la Prairie City Council meeting heard a request for a vote of censure for three councillors -- Brent Budz, Liz Driedger, and Melissa Draycott.

They're board members of Portage Regional Economic Development, and Luanne Anderson says they broke Council's code of conduct, following remarks in February from then-PRED Executive Director Douglas Barill during her attempts to have Council cut funding for PRED.

"The code of conduct says that councillors shall not intimidate other councillors, staff, or citizens in the community. By allowing Douglas Barill to call me a liar, to not take action to have him apologize -- because he didn't -- not only does that try to intimidate me, but it tries to intimidate other citizens from asking questions, or having an opinion."

Mayor Irvine Ferris asked Council for a motion to censure, but there was none.

"I don't think it's any great secret that there have been some issues with PRED, there are certainly some changes under way. And our reps on that board -- Councillor Budz, Councillor Draycott, and Councillor Driedger -- have done an outstanding job, and a tremendous amount of extra work on the PRED organization, so absolutely, I support them, and would not entertai the idea of censuring."
