The Community Foundation of Portage and District will be taking part in the Canada 150 Funding Program next year.

Executive Director Mary Lynn Moffat says a fund has been compiled with the support of local Community Foundations, the Community Foundation of Canada, and local leaders to celebrate Canada's 150th.

"It's an opportunity for non-profit organizations to take on a project that would celebrate Canada's 150. Some of the guidelines to the projects are we really want to see them encourage participation in community activities and events to mark the celebration of Canada's federation. We want to inspire a deeper understanding of the people, places and events that shaped the country and our various communities."

Moffat says it's important for non-profits to think locally when applying.

"The projects have to have an impact in the community. The Community Foundations of Canada and the Federal Government aren't going to know the issues and needs in the communities. Also, we're putting funds toward it, so we have a pot in a total of $30,000 CFPD Portage is putting in 15K and we are being matched by the Federal Government for this program."

Moffat says to apply for the grant you have to visit the Canada 150 site, and it will then be transferred to the correct community foundation. For more information on how to apply for a grant click here.
