Even with the tight schedule at the Manitoba Chambers of Commerce's 85th Annual General Meeting at Canad Inns in Portage, there were still a few surprises. Portage la Prairie and District Chamber President Dave Omichinski was awarded the Chamber Volunteer of the Year and says he didn't expect to win anything last night.

"I was not aware they even had awards, (laughs) and I certainly was not aware that I was getting one. It was a complete surprise and an absolute honour. I do this extra stuff because sometimes the only way to make sure something is done is to just do it. Just like the Nike ad. Sometimes you just have to get involved and do it, and if you have a complaint, do something about it."

President and CEO Chuck Davidson says the awards ceremony was a great way to cap off the night.

"We had a great day and finished it off with the awards ceremony, which was a great opportunity to recognize Dave Omichinski for his outstanding contribution to the network.

The other award winner from last night was Board of Directors Chair Kenneth Thomas, who took home the Harry Mardon Award.
