Some less fortunate children in Portage la Prairie will get to experience camping this year thanks to the Child and Family Services of Central Manitoba's Chance 2 Camp Barbecue.

The 8th annual event drew a large crowd to the CFS parking lot in Portage la Prairie where lunch, dainties, and a little bit of student entertainment took place.

"Once again the community has come out to support our event," says Foundation Administrator Nancy Funk. "Once again the community has come out to support the Chance 2 Camp barbecue. We certainly appreciate it for sure because last year we sent 70 kids to camp from the Portage area. Which is a huge dollar figure at the end of the day, and those are kids that otherwise wouldn't get to go camping so this barbecue goes a long way to making that happen."

Funk stresses the importance of blessing kids with the opportunity to camp when they normally wouldn't have a chance to do so.

"They do come from some economically disadvantaged backgrounds, where their families couldn't afford to send them to summer camp. It's not a cheap adventure. It will give them different experiences like meeting new friends and making memories. Some of the kids see it as a safe week for them so it's very important, and a very important part of our program to continue to provide that."

Portage Collegiate Institute jazz choir groups Jazzizle and Jambalaya provided the entertainment for the day with some wonderful songs. Grade 10 singer Kyla Jonas with Jazzizle says she was glad to participate in an event that will help local kids get out this summer.

"I like being able to help kids, but also do what I love. So I'm singing and in return, I'm helping other people with what I like to do, and I love helping people so it's a win-win for me. This was our final performance of the year and it's a great way to end it."

70 kids were able to experience camp last year and Funks excited to help again this year.
