The City of Portage la Prairie is examining the possibility of offering public transit.

This past spring, the City engaged an engineering firm to conduct a transit feasibility study and now public feedback is being sought.

"The purpose of this study is to identify and assess the feasibility of public transit options in the City of Portage, and this is something we've looked at a few times over the years," notes Councillor Wayne Wall. "This would include potential service options to Poplar Bluff Industrial Park, where Simplot and Roquette are, and adjacent communities."

Community members have been expressing an interest in transit for several years, and back in 2015, the Portage Community Revitalization Corporation (PCRC) began studying this need and released a report that outlined and reviewed potential models for public transportation. In addition, the report recommended that a feasibility study would be a good first step towards determining best solutions.

"That community public engagement is really important," adds Wall. "We want to hear from people about their transportation needs and they can start by filling out an online survey on the city website."

The survey aims to gather insight on where Portagers are travelling to and from and what their transportation needs currently are. The survey can be found here, and will remain open until July 11.
