You've likely seen plenty of large bodies of water in Portage la Prairie during the last couple of days of spring-like weather.

It's been keeping the City's public works crews busy, unclogging storm drains to maintain water flow. Public Works Manager Brian Taylor says they started last week, but the system that passed through on Friday slowed things down.

"That little bit of a rain/snow/windstorm that we got messed us up a bit, and now we've got things so frozen underground again, that we're having a hard time getting everything open. We're going to be working diligently at it, but it's going pretty slow right."

Taylor adds more hindrances may become a factor.

"And now we're probably going to cold again, by the sounds of it, and then warm up again, so I can't say how it's going to go. We definitely have got our list that we're working on, and we have people phoning in. We just ask that people be patient. Every call we get, we put on the list, and we check them all out."

He cautions about taking any action on your own.

"We certainly don't want anybody to try throwing salt or anything down the drain, if they know they know there's a drain out front, because that, as we know, is not environmentally friendly. We have our sucker trucks, we have our two steamers out, and it's (drain) thawing itself out as we're working at it, too. Sometimes  we can be working on something for a number of days, and then, all of a sudden, it just lets go."
