"Calling all male singers in Portage!" That's Portage Conservatory of Music director Helen White.

White says a community jazz vocal choir was started in January.

"At the moment we have lots of women who love singing, and we need men. So, if you used to sing in a choir at school, or you just want to start singing again, we do vocal jazz mostly, some pop tunes, we do concerts for the professional band, and we raise money for charities."

White explains you can contact Allison McEwing who organizes the choir and owns the conservatory with her husband Mark. She adds the vocal group sings jazz as well as some pop.

"We're doing a Beatles song, some old jazz like Georgia On My Mind, Girl From Ipanema. We do quite well-known things -- some of the old classics."

The group meets every Monday, with adults at 7:30 to 8:30 and the junior choir gathers from 6:30 until 7:30. White notes they also need some kids in grades 5 through 8. She says they can easily accommodate as many people as can make it out.

They rehearse at the Prairie Vineyard Church on Duke Avenue each week.
