This week saw the Portage la Prairie Parks Committee announce it's part of a social media contest through the Aviva Community Fund that could see $100,000 come to the city, for an accessible park on 3rd Street Northwest.

That's put a smile on City Councillor Brent Froese's face. He's the Community Services Committee Chair, and says it began at a north end grassroots level.

"And that has evolved into a full scale ad hoc committee of Council. The Parks Committee came about because there are a lot of kids that don't get into the regular programs that are available, say, at the PCU Centre, but in their neighbourhood, could certainly make use of facilities if they were accessible to them."

Froese is pleased to see north end residents taking action together.

"When the council that was elected in 2010 set its strategic priorities, north end development was one of them, and this it six years later, and we're seeing things happen. It's fantastic."
