The community response to the donation drive supporting the family affected by a fatal fire at Delta Beach earlier this week has been overwhelming, organizers say.

So much so that they're asking the community to hold off any further hard goods donations.

Brent Currie, a paramedic who was one of the first responders to the fire call, is helping run the drive. He says they've received so many items they're now asking people to focus on financial support.

"The donations have been absolutely fantastic, and not just from the Portage community, but outside as well," Currie says. "Right now they're coming in very quickly, and at a large amount, to the point where the decision was made this morning to put a hold on all non-monetary donations at this time."

Currie says they've run out of storage for hard goods, and adds volunteers need time to sort through everything to see what they have and what they need. Currie notes they're still working on lining up a home for Merle Cyr, Melissa Moore and family, but they're getting close.

"We have a few calls to make and papers to fill out, but we are getting close,” Currie says. “We don't have anything confirmed yet, but we're hoping we'll have something by the end of the day.”

"There are many people working on this,” continues Currie. “We've got nearly every realty agency in Portage actively trying to help, Manitoba housing and lots of private landlords."
