Saturday afternoon saw diversity take center stage at Portage la Prairie's Red River College campus.

The Portage Learning and Literacy Centre organized Portage Celebrates Diversity, and Events Assistant Josh Wright feels it turned out great.

"All cross-sections of the community are coming out to celebrate culture, mainly," he says. "And with culture, there are different aspects, like music, art, food, dance, and activities that are happening. People are taking part, people are presenting, it's a two-way thing that's connecting newcomers and the citizens of our community."

Wright says the event's grown since it began a few years ago. He notes then, it was more low-key.

"Where people came and brought food, and shared in activities, " he says. "But the public didn't really catch wind of that until this summer, when we started to promote it to the greater community. So consequently the event grew, and there's been more involvement from different community groups. It's a bigger event all around -- more going on."
