Donna Gislason says she was approached by friends and neighbours about running for Arborg town council in the past but the timing never worked out.

When it was announced there would be a by-election earlier this month to fill the vacant spot on council, she thought it was the right time.

Gislason received 101 votes defeating Ryan Sigurdson (45 votes) and Larry Spiess (43 votes) on Tuesday.

"I have a strong financial background. So, I think that will be an asset," says Gislason. "Also, problem solving and organizational skills. I've also been very involved in the community over the years with lots of different organizations. All volunteer work mostly."

Gislason grew up on a farm north of Arborg. She left for Winnipeg for a few years, before moving back to Arborg in 1976. She says she wants to help make Arborg a destination location for people looking for a place to live and work. She also wants health care to continue being a focal point for the town.

"I believe that we have been very fortunate in Arborg. We've had our present council and Mayor and past councils and Mayor have really done a good job," says Gislason. "I do feel it's important to keep pushing forward, so we can't rest on our laurels. You know, in this day and age, if you're not moving forward, you're falling behind, right?"

Gislason has been the chair of the Terry Fox Foundation for the area and has coached various sports in the community while serving on other committees and councils.

She adds, she is grateful the voters chose her, as she feels all three candidates could have done the job well.
