You may have someone knocking on your this month, asking for donations.

That someone's likely a Heart and Stroke Foundation canvasser, because February's Heart and Stroke month.

Shawn Rawlings is the campaign chair for Portage la Prairie and area. He's still looking for volunteers, with only 40 on board so far.

"Realistically, for me to cover the whole city, I need 100 volunteers," he says, "People are busy, I understand that, but it's such an important program because it's just about raising money for Heart and Stroke -- which is key -- but it's to get the message out about preventative medicine, about preventative techniques to make your lifestyle healthier. That's a big part of Heart and Stroke today."

Rawlings feels with 100 volunteers, the entire area could be easily covered, but even 20 more would help.

"That would be a blessing, because it would sure help things out," he says, "Our goal this year was bumped up a little bit from last year. Last year, we raised just over $33,000, we were a little shy on our goal last year. This year, they bumped me up to $37,500. I would certainly love to make that goal."

Rawlings acknowledges door-to-door campaigns might seem outdated in the digital age, but says it's still an effective program.

"We want to raise money, but also, we want to hit as many households as we can to hand out the information for Canadians, so they get an opportunity to see the information that's available."

He continues, "We hit over 2,000,000 households in Canada alone, just in this program in February, and raised just over $10,000,000. So it's a big program, it's one of our biggest fundraisers of the year."

If you want to volunteer, contact Rawlings at 204-239-1058. He says all volunteer canvassers will be have an identification badge, an information kit, and a proper receipt book.
