While many of the Canada Day Activities took place at Island Park, Crescent Lake was also a hub of activity on Friday. The Canadian Cancer Society hosted their second annual Dragon Boat Races on the lake, with 14 teams participating this year. Cancer Society Community Coordinator Jennifer Roy says they had many returning teams and a few new faces, despite having fewer teams than last year's inaugural race. She notes it was a great day, citing the flower ceremony as just one of the highlights.

"It's a very personal event for a lot of the spectators and those taking part in the ceremony. It's very emotional. We've got canoes of survivors and those paddling in memory of friends and loved ones. With that, those watching on the sidelines purchased carnations --with proceeds going to the Cancer Society-- to toss into the lake in memory, or for who they're here for."

Roy says it's always exciting to be a part of the Canada Day festivities, and they're pleased once again with the response to the races. Roy notes everyone knows someone who's been impacted by Cancer, and fundraising initiatives such as the Dragon Boat Race can go a long way toward raising funds for research. They're still tabulating the proceeds collected from this year's event, but last year managed to raise about $34,000.
