Three Portagers are receiving some prizes, but the real winner of Canada Day's Big Duck Race was Big Brothers Big Sisters of Portage la Prairie. It was the first time they've held the fundraising race, which saw thousands of ducks make their way down the lazy river at Splash Island. Executive Director Dawn Froese notes a lot of work went into making the fundraiser a success, and they were thrilled to see the community jump on board.

"I am so pleased, it has been so much fun. We've been dreaming ducks for a while now and it's neat to see the plan come to fruition, as well as all the great people who supported us by buying a ticket and buying a duck."

Froese says they managed to sell about 1,400 ducks prior to Canada Day, and continued to sell many throughout the day leading up to the event. She notes they're still tabulating the final numbers, but says all the proceeds will go a long way to improving the lives of the region's children.

"We find mentors for children who have a need for a mentor. We're finding throughout life that it's life-changing for some of these kids. They get opportunities they wouldn't otherwise get. They can dream of college and university, where it wouldn't have dawned on them before. There are lots of good benefits."

It was a busy day for the organization, as on top of the duck race they also had their set up featuring snow cones and cotton candy. Froese notes that's something they've been doing for a long time, and they're always thrilled to see the response to their presence.
