Thousands of rubber ducks swarmed the lazy river at Splash Island yesterday for the BIg Brothers Big Sisters second annual Big Duck Race.

BBBS Executive Director Dawn Froese explains what the funds raised go toward.

"It's going to support mentoring within the communities of Portage, Oakville and MacGregor. We offer mentoring programs to children 6 to 18 years old either with a teen volunteer or an adult volunteer."

She explains why they chose ducks.

"They're just fun! You can't see a duck, I mean, even when you say the word duck, can you say it and grumble? No! Ducks are fun."

Lucky duck #2156 floated the quickest and took first place while ducks #542 and #1720 took second and third respectively.

Froese notes a special thank you goes out to the Portage Co-op for sponsoring the event and to Boston Pizza and Christianson TDS for providing the prizes.
