It has taken almost two years but the province of Manitoba is getting closer to launching an electric vehicle pilot project in the town of Carman. A Town Council Representative has been invited by the province to participate in a working group, to evaluate the viability of low speed electric vehicles in their community.

The idea for this pilot project began in 2010 and the town just recently received the invitation, which is considered a step forward. Carman Councillor Brent Owen will represent Carman on the committee, and tells us it's a unique opportunity.

Originally the low-speed cars involved in this discussion were from Northland Machinery in Carman. The rechargeable battery models are restricted to a top speed of 40 kilometers an hour and would be allowed on side streets only. The cars feature seatbelts, turn signals, a horn, and 4 wheel brakes. South of the border there are some closed communities and towns that already use these vehicles.

A date for the first meeting is yet to be determined.
