The Rural Municipality Portage la Prairie is investing in keeping streets safe and keeping drivers aware of their surroundings.

Six mobile speed signs will be posted around the municipality with the goal of making sure drivers are conscious about their speed. Kam Blight, RM of Portage Reeve, is ready to roll out these speed signs and looks forward to being proactive in the community.

"Once again people are coming off the highway (at high speed) and going through the community of Poplar Point." Blight said. "We want them to be aware of the speed that they're traveling to make sure that they slow down."

Oakville, Poplar Point, and High Bluff will be the first three communities to receive a speed sign, with three more to be announced at a later date. After the speed signs have been placed in these communities for some time, they will eventually be relocated.

Expect these signs to be popping up around school zones and areas that connect closely to highways, as that's where Blight really wants to focus on.

Blight has also said that there is no current timeframe for when these speed signs will be placed. "We don't have a specific time on that yet. We just passed a resolution to get the process started and hopefully we can have them in a relatively timely fashion."
