Enrolment numbers are up in the Portage la Prairie School Division (PLPSD).

A PLPSD report says there are 31 more students compared to September 2015. The Division has 3,428 students in total at its 20 schools.

Supt. Hazen Barrett says in the past there's been years where they've been looking for hundreds of kids, but enrolment has stablized recently.

"We're still searching for some kids who are supposed to be in the system," Barrett says. "But it's certainly far, far fewer than we were before. It's encouraging."

The largest increases came in smaller elementary schools. Oakville School has 26 more kids this year, while Fort la Reine is up 20. Portage Collegiate Institute's numbers were essentially unchanged, down one student.

"The small schools seem to be swelling in population," Barrett says. "There's a tremendous response to the programs that are out there in the schools."
