The Winter Family Fun Day on Louis Riel day saw the MacGregor Iron Maidens women's hockey team play against the Ladies of Baker Colony in MacGregor. The effort included a silver collection and raised $1,200 they decided to give to the Family Abuse Prevention Centre in Portage la Prairie. Centre executive director Joyce Schrader had a visit from the representatives of the effort and was pleasantly surprised.

"When they attended this morning I was just astounded and so thrilled they chose us for the charity of choice this year," says Schrader. "It's awesome that these groups of women are getting together to have a great game of hockey, and also at the same time thinking about us."

Iron Maidens team representative Dayna Yurkiw says it's the first time they held a silver collection, and everyone was excited with how much they raised. She adds it's empowering to know a simple hockey game can make such a difference and support a worthy cause.
