If a postal strike interrupts mail traffic this weekend, the City of Portage la Prairie's prepared with several avenues for you to make your payments. Portage la Prairie mayor Irvine Ferris outlines the options.

"There are lots and lots of options for people to make payment. We have, of course, preauthorized payment plan. Anybody has the option of signing up for that. That could be used for utilities. There's also the budget-based payment program. That's for utility payments. Telepay is accessible. There's telephone Internet banking. People can come in person to pay utilities or taxes."

Ferris notes the deadline for property taxes is also coming up.

"The 2016 Property Taxes are due on July 29th, and they can be paid the following ways. They can be paid in person via cash, cheque, money order, Interac. They can be paid online via telephone, Telepay, or Internet banking through their financial institution. Now, it's important to note that to avoid late penalties to allow sufficient time for online payments to be received by the city on or before the due date. Post dated cheques via after-hours night deposit must be dated and received by the city by 4:30 p.m. on July 29th. That's the same if a person is using VISA, to check and find out when those payments are actually going through to avoid the penalty."
