It may be winter, but that won't stop the Winnipeg Sports Car Club from bring their Fire on Ice Racing Series to Portage la Prairie today.

The event is expected to feature ten cars, and you can head down to Crescent Lake to see all the action.

"The best thing about Portage is the way the community supports us. We have the banks lined up with spectators," says Matt Leveille, the publicity director for the series. "We don't often get spectators in numbers like this anywhere else."

Several of the drivers were out yesterday to test the track, and to learn where they can put the pedal to the medal safely.

"It's a tight, very technical track," says Steve Leiding, who is one of the ice race directors. "Probably speeds close to 100 kilometres per hour. Should be some good racing."

There will be more practicing between 10am and 11am, prior to the actual racing which begins at noon. It's expected to run until 4 pm.
