The holidays can be a very festive time with family and friends, but it's important to also keep fire safety top of mind during your celebrations. Portage Fire Chief Phil Carpenter says if you decide to go with a real Christmas tree, make sure it's a fresh tree and keep the trunk in water at all times. Carpenter notes lit candles should never be placed on or near the tree, and check all sets of lights before putting them on your tree. He adds you should also discard any sets that are damaged or old.

Carpenter says unattended cooking is the leading cause of kitchen fires, so it's important to stay in the kitchen when you have something on the stove. He notes any candles need to be in a sturdy holder and kept away from children, pets, and combustible material, adding be sure to blow candles out before leaving the room. Carpenter says because alcohol and fire are always a dangerous mix, keep a close eye on anyone attempting to cook or smoke while under the influence. He notes smokers should be encouraged to smoke outside, and it's a good idea to check for cigarette butts between sofa and chair cushions before you go to bed.

Carpenter adds they also recommend that you ensure there are working smoke alarms on every floor of your home, ideally outside sleeping areas and in each sleeping room. He says smoke alarms should be tested monthly and batteries should be changed at least once a year.
