No one was hurt in the fire, as two occupants were awoken around 4:30 a.m. and discovered the home was up in flames. Both escaped safely with their pet dog.

The Portage la Prairie Fire Department was on scene into the afternoon, after responding to the call around 5 a.m. Both Sommerfeld's and Elm River Colony's fire departments also came to the scene to assist in controlling the blaze.

The cause of the fire is not yet known. The Office of the Fire Commissioner is investigating.
