The Portage Fire Department presented the Firefighters Burn Fund of Manitoba with a $20,000 cheque yesterday.

It was the Firefighters Burn Fund Golf Tournament at the Portage Golf Club, and when all the golf was said and done, Portage Fire Chief Phil Carpenter presented Burn Fund of Manitoba Chairman Mark Johnson with the donation. Carpenter explains how the funds were raised.

"The efforts from our department that have stepped forward raising the funds through our bike auction, our golf tournament, there were also some private donations that have stepped forward for helping the cause. Whether we like it or not, injuries do happen -- burn injuries do happen -- but when they do happen we want to help them as much as we can."

Johnson says the money will go far in the province.

"I'm very happy. This will go a long way to help us with the work we're doing with burn survivors across the province. As well as our investments in fire and burn prevention as well."

Carpenter says they raised the funds through their bike auction, the golf tournament, and a number of private donations.
