The Salvation Army in Portage la Prairie is hoping for some help to keep the shelves at the food bank well-stocked. Major Brenda Coles says they received a lot of food over Christmas, which was wonderful, but supplies are getting low again so they're looking to the community for assistance. Coles notes the momentum with donations usually slows down after the holidays, adding February and March are especially tough. She says they're seeing at least fifty people come through their doors each week, noting some folks are just picking up bread but others need more of the non-perishable items to feed their families.

Coles says donations of non-perishables are always welcome, particularly things like canned meat, small jars of peanut butter, and low-sweetened cereals such as oatmeal. She notes they can also accept donations of fresh goods, adding some area farmers give them eggs and that's fantastic. Coles says root vegetables such as potatoes and carrots are welcome as well.
