Today marks 30 years since the Portage District General Hospital Foundation was created, and those involved with the organizations are gearing up for a busy year. A kick-off celebration was held in Portage la Prairie yesterday at What's the Scoop? to begin the year's celebrations. Executive Director Erin Miller says it was a great day to kick off their anniversary, describing the day as a good opportunity for people to come by, share their stories, and support the foundation.

"On September 10, 1986, we were created and have been doing some fantastic work since then. Celebrating the anniversary gives an opportunity to reflect, re-brand --which we have done-- and celebrate. We have celebrations throughout the whole year and this is the kickoff. It's been a fantastic day, and we were able to partner with What's the Scoop?"

As part of the 30th anniversary, the foundations introduced a new website, as well as social media accounts on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram all which include the ability to donate to the foundation. Miller notes all net proceeds from the sale of ice cream sandwiches and polar pops yesterday also went directly to the foundation. She says it's always great to see the community's support, adding all of the donations stay right here in Portage.

"100 per cent of our funds stay here in Portage and we have people in our community that need to use our hospital and people from the surrounding community that need our hospital. We've been doing some really great work, and people have done some fantastic work to get us to 30 years."

Other events taking place over the 30th anniversary celebration include the National Doctor Appreciation Day, the annual Foundation Friday barbecue, and other events.
