It was a busy weekend for fundraising in Portage la Prairie and in Macgregor. At the BDO Centre in Portage yesterday afternoon, Sunset Palliative Care wrapped up its first annual community garage sale fundraiser. Executive director Aldene Moroz comments on the event and it's success.

We partnered up with Recreation Opportunities for Kids, so Lynn Parker and her volunteers ran the canteen, and it worked really well. We had most of the people go through on Friday so we're quite happy with that. Next year we're going to do it bigger and better, and Lynn and I have some great ideas."

Recreation Opportunities for Kids executive director Lynn Parker says the event was a success thanks to the community.

"We want to say thank you to McMunn and Yates for donating the popcorn and the popcorn machine for us to use, and Canadian Tire for their sponsorship of the drinks for the canteen. A huge thank you also goes out to everybody that donated items for us, and like Aldene said, we've got some plans for next year so we're calling this one our first annual because we're going to be doing bigger and better things next year."

The other event that took place this weekend was at the Fire Hall in MacGregor yesterday, where the Macgregor Fire Department held its annual car wash and bbq fundraiser. MacGregor Fire Chief Chris Leckie comments on the annual event.

"We had a car wash and bbq lunch to fundraise for the MacGregor Fire Department. The money raised through the car wash is donations only and the bbq was $5 for a burger and a drink, but other than that it was all donations and all of the money raised goes toward the fire fighting equipment in the MacGregor Fire Department."

Leckie says it was busy from start to finish again this year, which is always good to see.
