Newcomer Settlement Services is teaching people how to garden. Plots were donated from the Portage Regional Recreation Authority (PRRA), tucked away at Republic Park.

Settlement worker Adrienne Lagacé says the workshop has been a success in its second year.

"There's 15 families that are really gung-ho," says Lagacé. "It's great because it's people learning how to grow certain vegetables in southern Manitoba, but they're also getting fruit and vegetables from it."

Aminata Koroma is part of the gardening group and says it's fun to be part of something where you learn from each other. She adds it's different gardening here than back home in Sierra Leone. One difference was seeing the sweet potato vine grown here in a flower pot compared to how she uses it to cook back home.

Another member, Saneeha Muhammed Faisal says the group is really interesting and isn't boring.
