Gas prices have hit a significant low this week, dipping below the 90 cent mark. Gas Buddy Senior Petroleum Analyst Dan McTeague says it's great to buy gas in Manitoba right now.

"It's been dropping dramatically right across the province," says McTeague. "Manitoba is now the cheapest province in which to buy fuel. Here in our own area, we're seeing prices that we haven't seen in almost two years. Much of that is the result of the overall price of oil dropping from $77 a barrel back at the beginning of October, all the way down to $44 a barrel. That's the primary reason we've seen prices drop as dramatically as they have."

McTeague says the low prices likely won't last long.

"I don't think we should get used to this," notes McTeague. "I think January will turn out to be our best month, prices will remain relatively stable. But with OPEC and a number of other countries joining together to cut back 1.2-million barrels in production. Alberta is cutting back for three months, 325,000 barrels a day so look for prices to start moving upwards."

McTeague adds the decrease in production will coincide with the federal government implementing its five-cents-per-litre carbon tax here in the province in April. This could potentially lead to a scenario where, in Manitoba and Portage la Prairie, we will see prices that were even higher than last year.
