The Portage la Prairie fire department's annual bike auction for the burn fund ended off with the sale of a surplus of bikes requiring repair or to be used for parts.

Christopher Genaille won the bid and shares how he plans to help the community.

"I bought a bunch of bikes that need a lot of work. But with a little time and a little T.L.C., I think I could donate some back into the community for some kids that don't have a chance to get a nice bike. That's what I'm hoping to do, and hoping to make a few dollars at the same time."

He adds he got quite a mix.

"There's a mixture. Some of them look like they're brand new. Some have a lot of nice parts. They're pretty rusty, some of them. But there's a lot of parts that can be saved: Gears, tubes, tires, pedals. There's a lot of stuff there -- a lot of potential. And then when the time is right I'll make a sign, put it on the highway and put, 'Bike Sale.'"
