A day devoted to gardening is perfect for anyone with a green thumb and Tuesday, April 4th is such a day at the Portage Regional Library.

The library will be hosting a Get Growing! gardening day from 10:30 to 8:00 p.m. and library Program Coordinator Lori Mackedenski notes it will be a day filled with gardening tips, techniques and inspiration. She shares there will be different sessions throughout the day including workshops on flower arranging and square foot gardening. Mackedenski explains what the square foot gardening session with Certified Square Foot Gardener and Master Gardener and Composter, Mick Manfield is all about.

"Square foot gardening is kind of one of those new trends that is kind of moving to the forefront. It's really quite popular in cities where you have smaller lots and you really have to maximise your space. So, Mick is going to give us a little bit of information about that and I think that should be really exciting because not everyone has a huge, huge lot to be doing gardening and producing food for themselves."

Mackedenski notes there will also be two sessions in the afternoon with Manitoba Master Gardener Kellie Liebzeit.

"The first one is called 'Growing from the Ground Up' and Kellie's got a presentation where she shows us basically how she started her own garden from scratch. Literally the ground up. And it's a work in progress, so it's still evolving but she's going to take us through the steps on how she did a little bit of planning and all that sort of stuff. Then she's got another presentation called 'Whimsy in the Garden' and that is going to be focusing on all those really neat decorations that you can add to your garden."

Mackedenski notes there will be coffee and refreshments available throughout the day. All the sessions are free of charge but registration was necessary for the morning's flower arranging class. You can check out the library's website for workshop times.
