More trails around Stony Mountain may spring up in the near future as a result of provincial funds.

At the RM of Rockwood's council meeting Tuesday, Minister Ralph Eichler came to give the Stony Mountain Community Association (SMCA) a $50,000 grant. Rockwood Reeve Jim Campbell says SMCA does all kinds of volunteer work in the community to improve recreation, and the funds will like go towards trails in Stony Mountain.

"Every dollar helps and this group has got a great volunteer energy base, and they always have a project on the go," Campbell says. "People are using the trails they've already started and they're excited about them."

Campbell adds the group is -- and has been -- involved in many other recreation initiatives. Bringing baseball and softball back to Stony Mountain, launching a youth soccer program and supporting women's rec hockey are just some SMCA's past projects, according to its website.

"We appreciate the work that they do and they just seem to be like energizer bunnies in that community," Campbell says. "They just never seem to slow down ... and they're on the pulse of the community."
