Members are happy at the Herman Prior Activity Centre in Portage la Prairie. Their washroom upgrades are now complete with the help of grants from the federal government.

Executive Director Chris Dumont says they began fundraising in 2018. She notes no significant upgrades had been done for quite some time.

"The seniors were coming to me and complaining because the toilets were too low," says Dumont. "They basically were all using the one toilet in the women's washroom because it was the only one with the higher seat. So, that made me start thinking about getting that part done."

She notes among the many upgrades, automation was implemented.

"The doors have touch-buttons. They're all automatic; the soap dispensers are automatic; the water is automatic; the paper towels are automatic," adds Dumont. "We couldn't get auto-flush because that would have doubled the cost of the project."

Dumont explains each toilet stall also has bars in them for assistance in manoeuvring.

"And the toilets are also higher," continues Dumont. "They're not really exciting things to apply for grants, but we really got a great, big kickstart from the federal government. They had an Enabling Accessibility fund. So, we got almost $42,000 from them."
