The federal and provincial governments are teaming up for several highway upgrades in this province.

An announcement earlier this week outlined work would be done on Highway 6 from the junction of Highway 248, 21 kilometres north to Highway 215.

Provincial Infrastructure and Transportation Minister Blaine Pedersen says it's important work, noting it's more that simply repaving.

"Intersection enhancements, paved shoulders, and rumble strips. So it's helping to improve safety there, hoping to reduce collisions, and the associated costs with those. And this is part of the ongoing work that's been happening on Number 6. There's a lot of commuter traffic between Winnipeg, and up to St. Laurent."

Pedersen understands the 10.6 million dollar project's only a small part of what needs to be done.

"The infrastructure requirements through all of Manitoba is quite daunting, and it's deciding on the priorities of it. The costs are huge on any project, so it's how to get the best use of the dollars available. There is no end in sight yet for highways that no be rebuilt."

It's expected the project will be completed this fall. Similar projects were announced for two stretches of the Trans Canada Highway east of Richer.
