Fighter, survivor, local legend.

Those are just some of the words being used to describe Holland resident Bob Humphreys. The 68-year-old was injured in December of 2016 when he was working on a roof, fell, and was struck in the back leaving him paralyzed in the snow for over 12 hours in frigid temperatures.

"A heavy weight fell on his back, between his shoulder blades, and the pain was so bad he couldn't move. It happened around 10 in the morning and it was something around 9:30 at night when he was discovered, and about 10:30 when we got him in the ambulance," says friend Brian Drummond. "He's been in the Health Science Centre since it happened, and he's starting to get some movement now."

Humphreys is in rehabilitation now and they're getting him on his feet while trying to return the strength to his legs and arms. He currently has the use of one arm with very little strength and very little use of his other arm. His legs are moving now as well, but still, lack the strength to walk.

"(Humphreys) told me that as long as the sun was shining he never got that cold because he was dressed for the weather," explains Drummond. "That was the big thing that saved him. He said he never started to worry until the sun went down, and it was down for about four hours before he was found."

There is a benefit social for Bob Humphreys Saturday night from 8 p.m. till 1 a.m. to help his family with finances.

"I would say it's very important to give them some more financial help because at this point he's not healing as much as we'd like to see, so we don't know what's ahead for the family for costs," he admits. "We just want to give them some more support and hopefully that will give the family some more hope, and Bob some more drive to get out of the hospital."

Humphreys has a big group of supporters out in Holland and will be welcomed back a living legend, and hopefully, a walking legend.
