It may not feel like the holiday season is approaching with all the recent warm weather.

But it is creeping up, and summoning your best Christmas spirit this weekend can help support a good cause.

Five homes in the Portage la Prairie area will be dressed up with Christmas cheer, and homeowners will open their doors for Homes for the Holiday tours. All proceeds go towards Habitat for Humanity Portage.

"The more people come, the more we will make and the more we can donate," says Homes for the Holidays committee member Tracy Vanstone. "It will go directly back to our community ... the more we can give, the better we feel and the more we are helping."

Vanstone says home hosts put a lot of effort into preparing their homes for the annual event, and it's an enjoyable experience for guests to see.

"They go all-out and get their homes ready, and we really appreciate that," she says. "We know it's not an easy thing to open your home to the public, but it's about remembering the cause. It's about giving back to Habitat, and that's why we do it."

"If we can be mindful of that, people can see the importance of it."

There are homes located in Portage la Prairie, and just outside. There are two sessions for guests to visit homes on Saturday: from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., then from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. More information is available on the community events page, and the Homes for the Holidays website.
