The Arborg Ice Dawgs of the Keystone Junior Hockey League are set to host the 2017 Western Canadian Junior B Keystone Cup Championship this April.

General Manager Ivan Gulay stopped in at Arborg Council's last meeting to request sponsorship from the town as the event approaches. Mayor Randy Sigurdson says they stopped by to give update Council on the Keystone Cup.

"We're hosting the championship this year and it's a really exciting time for Arborg," says Sigurdson. "There are going to be teams coming from all over, and they are expecting a lot of people to attend. The town agreed to put some money toward the event as you would expect, and we were very happy to do that because it's very beneficial for the town. Council had no problem putting $1,000 toward it."

The tournament is scheduled for Easter weekend, and is expected to bring a big crowd to the small town.

"We're talking to businesses to see if they can somehow remain open that weekend as well, but because of the influx of people, it's a good opportunity for them. It comes to Manitoba once every four years and you have to bid for it. Four years ago we were unsuccessful in acquiring this but we got it this year, and they've done a lot of work in preparation."

Sigurdson adds there's going to be a lot of very good hockey that takes place over three days, and they're really looking forward to it.
