If you've been putting off some work around the house or yard, you can get some help with your projects. The Manitoba Youth Job Centre's Odd Job Squad is back again this summer, with about 30 youth ready to take on some work throughout the Portage area. Youth Engagement Leader Keelin Horning says this week is their Job-A-Thon, where they encourage residents to give them a call to set up times when the youth can come and help with odd jobs. She says it's always amazing just to see how excited the youth are to get out and help with different projects.

"It's surprising how many local students are willing to work at such a young work, some are looking for full-time work at age 12 or 13, it's great to see that they're so eager to get out there and involved in the community."

She notes those hiring the youth to do some work can choose what they pay, based on the hours and extent of the work. Horning says in the past, they've had the kids involved with the program taking on jobs ranging from mowing the grass or weeding, to small painting projects. Horning notes using the group to complete your projects is a win-win situation, noting while it can help you finish some work around the house, it also provides a valuable opportunity for the young workers.

"It's a great experience to put on their resume once they get out there and are a bit older, maybe looking for something part-time or stable. It's just something to put on their resume."

She says the sooner you call, the sooner they can get their youth out and working. Those interested in hiring the Odd Job Squad can contact Horning at 870-0363, at portagelaprairiemyjc@gov.mb.ca, or stop by the youth job centre on Saskatchewan Avenue, right next to the Service Canada building.
