Canada Day 2016 is still about a week away, but the RM of Woodlands is already working on plans for next year. 2017 marks 150 years since Canada's confederation, and the milestone is being marked across the country, at the federal, provincial, and local level. Woodlands Reeve Trevor King says they're already beginning their planning, and have applied for grants to fund the celebration through both the local Community Futures, and the federal government.

"There are some opportunities available to have a good celebration in the municipality for the country's birthday. Our economic development officer and recreation director are currently working on some activities. They'll be drafting some applications and hopefully we'll be successful so we can offset the cost of that."

King notes while it's still early in the process, there are already discussions surrounding holding a parade, and a number of other exciting community events. King notes they've celebrated the municipality's local milestones in the past, so marking Canada's 150th will provide a great opportunity to celebrate along with the rest of the country.

"It's 150 years for our country, and I think the federal government's giving those opportunities to help celebrate that milestone, so we're going to try and take advantage of that and try and bring our own community together at the same time."

While Canada's 150th is still more than a year away, plans started as early as last year to mark the milestone across the country. The federal government's provided no shortage of funding for projects to mark the year, including the creation of a mosaic here in Portage, which will be one of 150 created across the country.
