Lighthouse Christian School in Southport held its Awards Ceremony last week. Academic Supervisor Iris Blume outlines the various awards presented.

Iris Blume"We have awards for highest marks in each subject, and we have different categories in the school. We have our senior category (high schools), and we have our juniors and primary. We have a passage in the scriptures that we memorize each month. So, they get an award for having said all of them. We also get awards for the highest mark, and for having the most 100's throughout the year, and for having completed the most amount of work in each subject."

She says they also had another unique award.

"And they also get an award for character traits. What that is, is throughout the year and throughout their books they specify character traits of Christ. The students are challenged to learn more about those traits, and to even take them on. So, at the end of the year we look over each individual student throughout the year. We pick out one that we think suits that student the most, and we give them that character trait. Different examples of character traits number to about 60, and include appreciative, available, all the way to confident, as well as compassionate."

She notes they had 28 students this year, including three kindergarten students who had a little graduation ceremony, and one grade 12 graduate who graduated last Friday night. For an end of the year celebration, Blume says they held a barbecue with the staff, friends and families just before the awards ceremony, giving a chance for the students to have fun together before the summer.
