The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 65 in Portage la Prairie needs a new roof.

"We're looking between 40 and $50,000 because both the old roof and the current roof have to be taken off and a new roof put on," explains Bob Oldford, Legion President. "We are pursuing any grants or funds that could come from different groups or organizations, or government areas. On top of that, we did get approval from the membership back in December to borrow the money if we need to, or as much as we need to borrow."

Fundraising is planned throughout this year, starting with a St. Patrick's Day Party this weekend featuring the band Swamp Gas from Neepawa.

"We're having a Raise the Roof Party and it's going to be an Irish night," says Oldford. "If we can fill the downstairs, that's about 150-160 people, charging $10 in advance and $15 at the door the event could bring anywhere from $1,600 or $2000 toward the fund. We're looking forward to a good crowd, Swamp Gas is really good and I feel we'll have a good time. We'll have Irish stew as well and it will be including in the price of the admission to the party."

Oldford adds they've got some other fundraising events planned like a possible casino night in June.
