The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #65 in Portage la Prairie is celebrating Legion Week, starting tomorrow.

Spokesperson Joanne Barnes says there are events throughout the week but their big focus is on Wednesday, which features the fourth annual Veterans' Dinner. Barnes notes the Legion is all about supporting veterans and their families, so the full roast beef dinner will be complimentary for any veteran, their caregiver or partner, and widows of veterans. She adds the cost for everyone else is just $12.00. Barnes says quite a few of the older vets have passed away in recent years, noting that's taken a toll on the Legion's numbers but they do have some of the younger veterans coming in.

She adds the younger veterans have a lot of government support in place as compared to those from the First and Second World Wars and the Korean conflict, but says it's still very good for the veterans of the Gulf War and Afghanistan to come down to the Legion and enjoy some camaraderie with their counterparts, through the Legion. Barnes notes it's important for the vets to keep in touch as a group so they can continue to support one another.

She adds Legion Week is open to the public, and you don't have to be a member in order to attend any of the events.
