The Portage Plains United Way's helping out a trio of local organizations, with one-time funding donations.

$1800 went to the Alzheimer's Society, $3000 to Portage Daycare, and $2000 to the First Presbyterian Soup Kitchen.

United Way Executive Director Mandy Dubois explains how the donations came about.

"Portage Plains United Way, each year, holds back a portion of our campaign dollars to go into a Community Response Fund, to help non-profit organizations in our community that aren't member organizations, because there is quite a criteria to follow, to get the annual funding from us. So it makes it easy for them to access some additional funding."

Dubois says there's still money left in the fund, and they welcome applications from non-profits.

"And these applications can come from anywhere in our catchments area. And the criteria really are just a non-profit organization, and as long as the programs, initiative, or event that you're hosting really helps the greater good of the community, a lot times we can help out."

She says the extra money happened in part because they exceeded their fundraising goal this year.
