Breakfast is now being offered to students at Fort la Reine School in Portage la Prairie.

"We've started a breakfast program at Fort La Reine School," says Amanda Sainsbury, President of Local 39 MNU - Portage Nurses. "There's a member whose children go to that school and she knew there was a need for it. In previous years at our annual general meetings in Winnipeg people come out as speakers and we usually donate to whatever the cause is. Last year we wanted to do something more local so we donated to La Verendrye and North Memorial for their breakfast programs."

Sainsbury says a member then approached them about bringing the program to Fort la Reine and they got things running by May 1st.

"We had committed $500 to see where it would get us to, so we're not sure what we'll need exactly, and we're also taking donations. We have signs and boxes up at the hospital for nurses to bring things in to help out."

Sainsbury adds it feels great to be helping ensure kids are getting what they need to have a productive day at school.

"We've also been approached by Crescentview School, they've said there's a need for one there as well, for now, we'd like to see how we can maintain one before we commit to another one."
