The victim of Monday's house fire in High Bluff is receiving some help from a concerned Portage la Prairie resident.

Amanda Zapotochny's stepped up, explaining the lady's one of her husband's co-workers, and is a very private person.

"And I thought, if you have nothing, a good place to start is with a couple of dollars in your pocket, go get some clothes, gas money, whatever you need, and it's just kind of escalated from there. I have this side, home business that I do, and I am selling my cookies, my cakes, my cake pops, and 100% per cent of the proceeds is just going to into gift cards and cash for her, so she can get started again."

She'll continue her drive until Saturday.

Zapotochny announced what she's doing this morning on Country 93, and says her phone hasn't stopped ringing since. She feels it's a reflection of how Portage area people care.

"Portage has an amazing group of people. It's in our hearts to give and to help. I think it's amazing living here, it's just crazy, the support that happens. We saw that with fire that happened a couple of weeks ago. They had so much stuff, they couldn't take any more. We're humans -- if someone's hurting, we want to help. It's part of our DNA."
