Another Louis Riel Day is in the books for Portage la Prairie.

Manitoba Métis Federation (MMF) elder and organizer of Monday's event Kevin Way says he's been a Federation member since the mid-80s.

"To be involved in this and have our eighth year come around, it was an opportunity for me to just kind of express my views and offer an opportunity for people to see how Louis Riel formed the province along with his provisional government, and also to enjoy some good Métis entertainment and food," says Way.

He notes it brings a great number of people out providing a chance for education. Way says with the province finally recognizing that Métis were the founders of Manitoba, it's a great opportunity for education. He adds it also shows some recognition and cultural heritage of what happens in our province.

Way explains various entertainers helped, along with representation from local government and the province, as well as the Manitoba Métis Federation government.

MMF member Kerri Vandenberg says it was a fabulous celebration and showcases the culture of many people. She notes everyone is able to ask questions and then be informed about what is a Métis. Vandenberg adds she is a descendant of Riel.

She says the Métis have struggled to have their own nation, noting they have their own president and now have a voice.

She adds the great support shows how the community is certainly behind Louis Riel day, noting the flag is flying at City Hall, many sponsors and donations came in from various organizations, and July of this year will be the third annual Métis Days celebration.
