The Alzheimer Society of Manitoba is again presenting the "Minds In Motion" program at Stride Place in Portage la Prairie. North Central Regional Coordinator Karen Lambert says the sessions are for people who have early to mid-stage dementia and their caregiver or care partner. Lambert notes that could be either a spouse, an adult child, a sibling, or a paid companion. She says this program gives folks an opportunity to meet and socialize with other people who are going through a dementia journey, and to have some fun. Lambert notes the sessions begin with about forty minutes of exercise followed by a coffee break and social time before starting some brain stimulating games. She adds this Monday they're hosting a music therapist from Winnipeg who's coming out to do the final part of the session.

Lambert says the last time they ran "Minds In Motion" here in town they had six pairs registered, noting everyone seemed to really enjoy themselves and they made some new friends as well. She says Monday, February 13th, will be the third session of the current eight-week program, and they're marking it as a time to reach out to the community and create more awareness about the program itself. Lambert adds anyone who's interested in learning more is welcome to come to Stride Place and participate, but because seating is limited they're asking that you call their Winnipeg office first to register.

She says this program helps lower the stigma that's attached to any brain illness, noting it's also a great way to meet other people who are going through the same journey. Lambert says the caregivers have a chance to relax and enjoy themselves and the people with early to mid-stage dementia are accepted at whatever level they're at and however much they can participate. She adds the sessions are all channelled to focus on their capabilities. If you'd like to check out Monday's session, please call the Alzheimer Society's office at 204-943-6622.
